Intro to Wood Shop - Safety & Operation (San Francisco)

An intro to the core machines in the wood shop.

Description

This class covers safety procedures and basic use of equipment in the wood shop. Users will learn how to use the dust collection system, operate and adjust the machines, and make straight and mitered cuts. Users will perform a variety of cuts and sand a plank of wood to demonstrate proficiency on each machine. After this class, users will be able to make safe and accurate cuts using the power tools in the wood shop to dimension lumber, shape wood, and safely begin basic woodworking projects. The following machines will be covered:

  • SawStop table saw 

  • Festool sliding compound miter saw (chop saw) 

  • Drill press 

  • Band saw 

  • Belt sander 

  • Disk sander 

Materials: Solid wood, plywood, composite boards such as MDF, OSB and duraboard, and some plastics like acrylic, delrin, and polycarbonate. 

Audience: This safety and basic use class is suitable for shop users of all levels of experience.  It is a great starting point for how to use tools to work with wood.
