Intro to Precision Machining - Safety & Operation
An introduction to the manual lathe, manual mill, bandsaws, drill press, and tapping machine.
Description
This class introduces users to the safe operation of many metalworking tools in the precision machine shop used for the milling, drilling, turning, and cutting of metals and plastics with high precision. There will be a thorough explanation of the capabilities and dangers of each machine, followed by a demonstration of basic use-cases. Once users have completed the course, they will be ready to create basic but precise geometric modifications to rough stock. Machines covered in the class include:
- Manual lathe
- Manual milling machine
- Drill press
- Tapping machine
- Bandsaws
Materials
Metals (aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, titanium, etc), plastics, some types of composites (check with shop staff), wood, and others.
Audience
The course is great for beginners who have never used the machines within the shop. It is also great for experienced machinists to familiarize themselves with the operation of our specific machines.
